Unexpected Encouragement
I am an avid pickleball player. I have been playing for about three years now, and I love it. I look forward to playing regularly and enthusiastically. It has become one of those activities that brings me joy, movement, challenge and community. Recently, I started taking lessons because my natural talent and ability had taken me as far as they could. I had reached the point where enthusiasm was no longer enough. If I want to improve, I need guidance, correction and practice.

Creativity
When I was younger and even into early adulthood, I didn’t saw myself as creative. Looking back, I realize the truth was slightly different. I had not given myself permission to try anything that felt vaguely creative. I also had a narrow definition of creativity. To me, creativity meant being able to draw or paint. Since I never spent hours with a paintbrush and I was fairly certain I did not possess that kind of talent, I decided creativity was not for me. Some people find

Joy At Work Starts With Belonging
Recently a friend sent me a photo of a slide from a presentation she attended at a conference. The slide shared statistics about joy at work. It got me thinking again about the work I have been doing, the reading I have been doing and the way I have been writing and speaking about joy. As often happens, I found myself reflecting on joy in two ways. What does it look like personally? And what does it look like professionally? As I sat with the professional side of that que

What I Learned at the Gross Global Happiness Summit
I recently attended the Gross Global Happiness Summit at the University for Peace (Upeace) in Costa Rica, a UN-mandated university. Let me start by saying that before last summer, I had no idea such a place existed. Their guiding idea is simple and powerful: if you want peace, you have to work for peace. A concept for all of us to consider. The conference brought people together to learn from one another, share meals, exchange ideas and hear different perspectives, all wh

The Kindness Question I Can't Shake
I recently attended the Kindness in Education conference here in Bermuda. I came as a participant and I also had the opportunity to facilitate a workshop on kindness, what it looks like in practice and how we can embed it in school life for teachers and staff, parents and students. By the end of our session, the group had created a list of activities and approaches they could take back to their schools. Ideas that felt realistic and immediately useful. I enjoyed the guest spe

Making Joy Bread with Kindness
Hot joy bread, right from the oven. Soft. Buttery. Steaming. We broke it with our hands and passed it around the table, watching the steam rise as if the room itself was exhaling. The fragrance of yeast and flour wrapped itself around us and then the butter joined in, melting slowly, deepening the scent, turning the moment into something almost sacred. I could feel the anticipation before I even took a bite. My mouth watered. My shoulders softened. My whole attention moved to

Kindness
“In a world where you can be anything, be kind.” I must add to that thought. Kindness costs nothing, but it can change everything. It can ease tension in a hard moment. It can soften a difficult situation. It can make a difference for someone who is tired, overwhelmed or simply trying to get through their day. Kindness is not soft. It is not passive. It is a decision. Sometimes it’s an easy decision. Sometimes it’s a decision I make on purpose. When I think about kind

Understanding Belonging: More Than Just Membership
I recently had a meaningful conversation about the idea of belonging, a topic close to my heart and deeply embedded in many of the workshops I create. As we talked, I found myself making notes, eager to capture the nuance of our discussion. Belonging, after all, isn't just a theoretical concept, it's a profound human experience that shapes our interactions, communities, and sense of self. Belonging is also my word for the year and one of the themes in my 2025 calendar , so I
