As we step into February, many of us continue to reflect on ways to bring more meaning and happiness into our lives. One powerful way to achieve this is by embracing joy. I've been thinking a lot about joy, so much so I might add a question about joy to the list I ask on my podcast – ABWilson's Heart of the Matter.
Joy is not a fleeting emotion; it’s a state of being that can ground us, uplift us, and help us navigate life with a lighter heart. But how often do we pause to truly reflect on our joy?
What brings you joy?
Take a moment to think about it. What activities, people, or experiences light you up? Maybe it’s the laughter of a child, a walk along a quiet beach, or the satisfaction of completing a creative project. Joy doesn’t have to come from grand events; often, it’s found in the small, seemingly ordinary moments. Identifying what brings you joy can be a powerful step toward creating a life that feels more fulfilling.
My friends know I am a pickleball fanatic. I play as often as I can because I recognize that playing a good, satisfying game brings me immense joy.
How are you incorporating joy daily?
Once you’ve identified what brings you joy, the next step is to incorporate it into your daily routine. This doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Joy can be found in:
A five-minute break to enjoy a cup of coffee.
Listening to your favorite music during your commute.
Sending a kind message to a friend.
Taking a moment to appreciate nature’s beauty, even if it’s a tree outside your window, on a street or in a nearby park.
By intentionally weaving moments of joy into your day, you’re boosting your own well-being and creating a ripple effect for those around you. Joy is contagious—when you bring it into your life, others can feel it too.
Making joy a habit
To make joy a lasting part of your life, consider setting small, achievable goals. You could start a gratitude journal, noting one joyful moment each day. An idea I saw recently was creating a joy jar, where you write down joyful experiences and revisit them whenever you need a pick-me-up. The key is consistency—even the smallest actions, when done regularly, can lead to profound changes in your outlook and energy.
Your joy journey
As you embark on this journey to embrace more joy, remember that it’s a deeply personal experience. There’s no right or wrong way to find joy; what matters is that it resonates with you. So, I invite you to pause and reflect:
