Appreciative Inquiry is a positive and strengths-based approach to exploring and improving various aspects of life.
I’ve been asked how can Appreciative Inquiry be used for self care? How can I answer questions I ask myself?
Options
There are several methods I’ve used myself:
Find a quiet place, with no distractions compile the questions you want answers to and simply talk to yourself. Give yourself permission to answer each question fully, openly and honestly.
Using the same method, record your responses and listen to them later. The biggest hurdle is most people aren’t used to hearing their own voices. Once you get past that, find time to listen to your response and decide if you have a different answer. List to your response immediately, then try a week later, a month later, a year later. What has changed? Are your answers the same or have things shifted in your life that provide you with different answers.
A third method is journaling. Grab a pen and a piece of paper, a note book or your laptop/phone and answer the questions.
Try each method
If you try each method determine which works best for you. You may find they each work at different times for different reasons.
I have found talking to myself and asking myself one or two questions is sufficient. I don't need to record the answers because I want to remember the moment the response came to me. That was more important than documenting my answer at that time.
Other times I’ve had to write my answers and when I returned to them later I was excited by the insight I had had at that moment.
Once you have tried one or all options, drop me a note and let me know which worked best for you.
Conclusion
There is no right or wrong way to have a meaningful conversation with yourself. The important thing is to ask and answer the questions yourself. No one needs to know how you did it. Are you looking for some great questions to ask yourself, read part two of this two part series.
