I was invited, somehow, to contribute to a collaborative article on LinkedIn. The subject I was asked to write about didn’t match my expertise. So, I looked around until I found I topic I could sink my teeth into only to find I had 750 characters. I wrote my piece and decided to expand on that slice of wisdom and write this blog. Here’s the original article submission.


A positive and thriving working environment is essential for the success and well-being of employees and the organization. As a manager, you have the power to shape the culture and atmosphere of your workplace. One effective approach to improving your working environment is through Appreciative Inquiry, a methodology that focuses on strengths, successes, positive experiences, and collaborative problem-solving. In this blog, we'll explore three key Appreciative Inquiry questions managers can ask their staff to help enhance the working environment.


1. What are the strengths and positive qualities that define our team or organization? How have these strengths contributed to our success in the past?


The first appreciative question encourages you to recognize and appreciate the strengths that already exist within your team or organization. Every workplace has unique assets, whether it's the dedication of your team members, their diverse skills, or a culture of innovation and collaboration. Reflect on the strengths that have contributed to your past successes.


Consider holding a team meeting where you discuss and celebrate these strengths. Acknowledging what's working well can boost morale and motivation.


Encourage team members to share their individual strengths and how they contribute to the team's overall success. This can help foster a sense of pride and belonging.


2. Can you share a memorable experience when you felt most engaged, motivated, and valued in our workplace? What made that moment special?


This question invites team members to reflect on their past positive experiences within the organization. What made them feel engaged, motivated, and valued? These experiences hold valuable insights into what drives employee satisfaction and productivity.


Gather anecdotes and stories from your team. These narratives can offer valuable clues on what elements of the workplace resonate with your employees.


Use this information to identify common themes or aspects that lead to positive experiences. You can then work on replicating these elements in your current work environment.


3. What small changes or initiatives can we introduce to make our workplace even more enjoyable and productive? How can we build on our existing positive aspects?


The final question empowers your team to brainstorm practical solutions and improvements. This collaborative approach can lead to creative ideas that enhance the working environment.


Organize brainstorming sessions or workshops to generate ideas. Encourage participation from all team members, and ensure everyone's voice is heard equally and valued.


Once you have a list of suggestions, prioritize them based on feasibility and potential impact. Implementing small changes can have a significant positive effect on the work environment.
